Honorable Mention Walking to Jerusalem Christopher T. George In sackcloth, I walk barefoot, ash on my temple. Stones, glass, war machine parts, pierce my soles; the scorch of desert sand completes the scourge. The air burns, pungent with death, and I'm blind. On what do I step? Child's toys? Body parts? My soles feel textures just as I seek truth. In my pocket, I hold a heel of bread, a Gospel, and a history of the world in braille, palimpsests of human failings and feelings. Lord, keep me on the right path! The devil crouches in soft places, his dark chasms wait to swallow me.
